Why we need to win the Lottery

Wednesday, April 30th, 2003

So Jon and I had an appointment yesterday to pick out all the stuff we wanted for the house we’re having built. It was interesting, and we ended up getting almost everything that we wanted. However, I have come to the conclusion that I have expensive taste. I sort of knew this, but wasn’t sure how far it extended. It was amazing, given a choice between at least two of anything I invariably picked the most expensive option. For example, we had the choice between 7 different kinds of carpet, five of which were virtually indestinguishable from each other. I know absolutely nothing about carpet, and yet I managed to pick out the most expensive one. It’s like some crazy talent. I decided that I didn’t need slab granite countertops in the kitchen, but still managed to pick the most expensive alternative, granite tile. In general its amazing to me how expensive house stuff is, and I guess my taste doesn’t help. So I’ve decided that we need to win the lottery, which I think is the easiest way to deal with my fondness for expensive stuff. I’m planning on doing it on Saturday, so if I don’t write for a while that means I actually won and I’m out spending it on $500 dollar doorknobs and 24k gold toilet seats.

My Monday

Monday, April 28th, 2003

So my day today was pretty uneventful. Jon and I watched some episodes of “Trading Spaces” that we’d recorded on our PVR…I think it’s funny that Jon finds the show just as interesting as I do, since he really isn’t all that into home improvement stuff. On a similar note, we’re going to pick out all the stuff for our house tomorrow like carpet, paint, what extras we want, all that stuff. It should be interesting. And expensive. Oh well…it’s worth it.

I read the book “Holes” today. It was pretty good for a young adult book, and I’m looking forward to seeing the movie, since it was simple enough that it would be pretty easy to adapt to the big screen and keep the flavor of the book.

Other than that not a whole lot is going on…I’m gonna try and get some sleep but I’ll write again on Wed.

Bowling with the Champs

Sunday, April 27th, 2003

So today Jon and I decided to explore the area that our new house will be in, and we came across a bowling alley/arcade/restaurant that’s about 5 min away. It looked pretty cool so we decided to bowl a few games. After four games I came to the conclusion that I will never have a high paying career in the fast-paced and exciting world of professional bowling. In my highest-scoring game I bowled a 72. It was pretty depressing, there was a family next to us whose 7 or 8-year-old routinely knocked down more pins than I did. I did beat Jon one game (he kept getting gutterballs for some reason) but the other 3 he beat me soundly. Oh well, I guess I’ll never be on “Bowling with the Champs.”

On a different and less family-friendly note, Jon and I watched a rather entertaining movie last night with the creative and descriptive title “Whore of the Rings.” Although I’d definately say that “Lord of the Rings” had better production value, there’s something to be said for a movie where the wizard’s name is Gancock. And I don’t think there was any anal sex in the original, although I haven’t watched the special uncut edition yet…

We went to Uwajimaya yesterday and got the stuff (including a hot plate) to make sukiyaki and yakisoba noodles, so thats what I made for dinner tonight. It was pretty tasty.

Well the weekend is pretty much over, so I should probably go do all the productive things I promised myself I’d get done before tomorrow, so night night for now.

My Lack of Ambition

Saturday, April 26th, 2003

So my lack of ambition might be obvious from the lack of recent entries, but for some reason today I’m feeling like writing. The book signing that I went to on Thurs. was really interesting (despite Jon’s confusion) and Jacqueline Carey was a really interesting woman. The series of books (Kushiels Dart, Kushiels Chosen, and Kushiels Avatar) that she wrote are really good, and I’d recommend them to anyone interested in fantasy/alternate history. On a related note, I just read the book Blood Music by Greg Bear, which I really enjoyed. Anyone that likes hard sci-fi with a focus on humans rather than aliens would enjoy it. I’m planning on reading Holes, which is a young adult book, by Tuesday so when I see the movie tuesday night I’ll know what to expect.

Not much planned for the weekend, I’m going to a candle party tonight (kinda like a tupperware party) and I have to finish my curriculum by Monday, but all I have left to do is type it.

Well nothing else to say now, maybe I’ll continue this ambitious trend and write more tonight or tomorrow.
