The Great Fruit Debate

So at dinner tonight, Jon and Amanda and I somehow found ourselves in the middle of a conversation about the “Fruit of the Loom” mascots; those men dressed up like giant fruit in the commercials. We could not, however, remember exactly what kinds of fruit they were. We were pretty sure that there was an apple and a bunch of grapes, but we couldn’t remember what else. Eventually we decided that there were actually 2 apples, one red and one green, and a bunch of grapes. However, since we were not certain, and because silly things like that bother me, I decided to look for confirmation on the Internet. I figured that if any site would have the info I needed, it would be the company website. But alas, the fruity mascots were nowhere to be found. The site did offer me some hope, though, in the form of a contact page. So being the involved consumer I am, I sent the company an email asking them to not only identify the fruit in the commercials, but also to tell me if they had names, other than the names of the fruit they were dressed as. I wait with bated breath for a response.

  1. Not only were we questioning what the clump of withered, dead looking leaves were (glad to know others are out there doing the same), there is another question… Years ago it seemed there wasn’t a “leaf” guy in the fruit of the looms guys. Apple, green and purple grapes (or apparently gooseberries?), but what was the other fruit? Another apple perhaps a pear? This is the question we’d love an answer too. Any answers out there?

This question has been burning within the very essence of my soul. I am both encouraged and saddened to know that there are others that have suffered as much as I. We must all ask ourselves, however; “Are we prepared for the answer? Are we ready to know the truth?”
What if; (I offer) this yellow, frilly, beacon of hope is nothing more than a yellowish-greenish-leafy-leaf? Could our hearts stand such a let-down? Were we not hoping that this yellow mass served a higher (if not fruitier) purpose?
I say NO! We are not ready! HE WILL ALWAYS BE A FRUIT TO ME!

My son asked me this very question the other day. Being a girl and “Fruit of the Loom” has only recently made girlie stuff, I had no idea. I told him to ask his dad, who also had no idea. We also looked it up on the site and figure by the logo picture that he’s the grape leaves. People do eat grape leaves. I guess there’s a new “Urban Myth”

I, like many other before me, found myself pondering this great mystery. After reading the responses, I am convinced (and somewhat let down) that the unidentified fruit is in fact nothing more than a bunch of leaves. I did notice that some of the logos for FOTL had gold leaves while others had green ones. What’s up with this?? I think that the company created this mystery by changing the logo after revealing the leaf man to the world so that everyone would wonder what the hell he was.

  5. Tim Kievit says:

I got an answer directly from the horses mouth…

He is supposed to be grape leaves.. so why do the grapes get all the attention? why not an apple tree?

I’M SERIOUS!! I WANT ANSWERS!! HEADS WILL ROLL!!

Fruit of the Loom is RACICT!! I’m pulling my pants down cuz I’ve soiled my FTL boxer briefs in discontent…

It’s comforting to know that there are other people out there plagued with the same questions as I am.

My sister and I just saw the new ad with the Fuit Guys at Christmas - and both wondered what the brown rags guy is supposed to be. I figured a leaf - but was half joking. But leaf seems to be the consensus.

I sure hope the Fruit Guys comeback is smashing success. I’ve missed them.

Thank god for this website. My GF and I have been trying to figure it out and putting the search on our “to do” list for the internet only to overlook it for nearly a year. I am glad to see there are other deranged folks out there that complicate their lives with the esoterics of “that brown wad”. I had figured it was tobacco leaves but was befuddled as to how that would have stayed. Thanks for clearing this crazy debate up. :)

  11. Andy says:

I have figured it out. The red guy is an apple…easy..The green guy is a bunch of leaves. The yellow guy is actually green, he is green grapes. Finally the purple guy, is purple grapes. Now does anyone know where I can get these costumes, or an idea of how to make them? Oh one more thing, Their called “The Fruit Guys” from Fruit of the Loom.

    Green, brown and yellow.

  16. Anonymous says:

actually… they are: green grapes, purple grapes, an apple, and just plain old LEAVES. his color changes with the season. you can find it all on their website.

  17. Vladdrac138 says:

I LOVE your website! It has been driving me CRAZY trying to find out WHO the apple guy is in the newer commercials…I ask SO many people I come across and I am embarassed to tell them I have aMAJOR crush on the cutie! Can anyone help>>>:)

  23. Snuzin says:

    Here is the answer!!
    From Wikipedia:
Fruit of the Loom Guys are essentially mascots for the underwear company Fruit of the Loom. These characters are men dressed as human-sized fruit: purple and green grapes, an apple, and a leaf whose color changes with the seasons.

Bio on the green leaf says his color changes with the season too

  24. MT__ says:

I like your website I will share this with friends

  25. Larry says:

Well me and my wife just got into a huge debate about what the fruit guys are. She thought the green guy was spinach and that spinach is a fruit because it grows from the ground. She was really just saying stuff to my comment and didnt want to admit she was wrong because she confused the debate with a tomateo being a vegatable or a fruit because it has seeds!!!! Crazy women, thats why i love her. Anyway she then said the green guy was a fig leaf or a vine leaf from the grapes. Which makes no sense because the green grape is there and the purple grape is there. Why dont they bring in a tree for the apple? Well to bust all yall bubble the “green guy” is a leaf and the yellow mystery guy is a yellow gooseberry, the yellow guy is not confirmed but i know for sure the green guy is a leaf. http://www.thefruitguysfans.com

  26. Florence says:

I don’t do much with my computer, but I was positive I could fing the answer. Thank you. The question of the fourth “fruit” has been driving me nuts and no one wanted to speculate or debate this important question.

  27. Heather and Becky Sprinkel says:

thank you for giving us the answers. i had look up the fruit of the loom website first but still did not like that they said he was an autumn leaf. why is he all wilted then? i thought wilted lettuce. but since seeing the tobacco leaves pic from above, that is a pretty convincing argument. you would think he could be a prettier autumn leaf since they decided to make a costume out of it.

  28. MelodyLynn says:

It’s a shriveled up cotton plant!

  29. Mikey says:

Please excuse my girlfriend, it is either a wad of tobacco or a bud of good ol’ Mary Jane. There now everyone can sleep at night
