Geek Talk

So as anyone who knows me well can tell you, I’m a chronic reader, and one of my favorite authors is Laurell Hamilton. Her books are a mix of horror and fantasy with a lot of humor and some sex thrown in for good measure. She’s writing 2 series, and the new book in one of them just came out. It’s called “Seduced by Moonlight” and despite the title, I swear it’s not romance. I’ve been waiting for it for like 2 years, and I must say I was kind of disappointed. It was like 400 pages of fluff…nothing really significant happened. And now I have to wait another 2 years for the next one. It’s most annoying.

On the upside, while I was at B&N picking up my book, I ran across another book that looked really interesting called “Sunshine” (by Robin McKinley) and it turned out to be very good. Its a vampire book, but not your typical vampire story, I was actually quite impressed. I’ll have to go read the other books by the author.

Return from the Frozen Tundra

So I’m back from my trip to Milwaukee, and I must say I really enjoyed it. I got to see 2 of my favorite people (Kim and Julia) and it was a lot of fun. I also got to eat at some of the restaurants I’ve been missing since the relo to Portland. Thanks, Kim, for carting my ass all over the city at the whims of my stomach, I really do appreciate it. Although I already said it in person, I also wanted to wish both Kim and Julia Happy Birthdays. (Kim turned 24 and Julia turned 18 on Jan 26th).

The one thing that kinda sucked about Milwaukee was the weather, although having lived there for the majority of my life I wasn’t too shocked by the cold and snow. It was in the single digits for most of the trip, and getting back to the mid-50’s in Portland was a relief.

Underworld

Sunday, January 11th, 2004

So Jon and I went to like 6 stores looking for a copy of Underworld on DVD today, and everywhere we went it was sold out. I hadn’t realized it would be so hard to find…I might just save myself some trouble and get it online instead. It’s not that big a deal, but it was kind of a cool movie and I’d like to own it.

Free At Last

So the snow has finally melted enough that we can venture forth again. Jon and I went to the gym this morning for the first time in a week, which was nice. It’s funny how it’s really hard to motivate myself to go, but once I get there I really enjoy it.

Tonight we’re going to go see “Kill Bill” again at Grand Lodge which should be fun. I can’t wait for the second part to come out. Other than that, no plans for the weekend, just relaxing and paying some bills.

Snow

Friday, January 9th, 2004

So the weather’s been really shitty for the past couple of days here. We got like 4 inches of snow on Monday night and it’s been cold enough that it hasn’t melted yet. If we were back in WI, this wouldn’t be a big deal, the city would have plowed, salted, etc and we’d all be able to get on with our lives. However, in Portland, they’re not really equipped to deal with that much snow, so now, four days later, it’s still sitting on the roads. It’s supposed to warm up this weekend though, so hopefully it’ll melt off.

In other news, I just found out that I can start school at Western Culinary in Feb instead of waiting until April, so that’s pretty exciting. The only downside is that class is from 7am til noon, which means I’ll have to leave the house at 6am. That might take some getting used to, lately I’ve been staying up until 3am or so and sleeping til noon. I really should try to get on a more normal schedule.

I’m going back to Milwaukee to visit my friends at the end of the month. It’ll be the first time I’ve been back since we moved out here a year and a half ago. I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone again, especially since I’ll be there for 2 friend’s birthdays. It’ll also be nice to eat at some of my favorite restaurants. I think I’ll probably spend more time at Noodles and George Webb while I’m in town than anywhere else :)
