Yay for Spring Break

Monday, March 29th, 2004

So I’m off of school this week for spring break, which is pretty cool. I mean, I really like school, but it’s nice to be able to sleep in. On Saturday Jon and I went downtown and wandered around, went to the Chinese Garden, the Saturday Market, the mall, and went to Bush Garden (a Japanese restaurant) for dinner. It was a lot of fun. Sunday we just hung around the house and were generally unproductive, which was also a lot of fun. Tomorrow I’m meeting some of my friends from class for coffee and then one of them (Zoey) and her daughter and I are going to go to the Children’s Museum and spend the afternoon there. Wednesday Jon and I are going to head to Seattle to hang out for a couple of days. I haven’t been there since our honeymoon, almost 5 years ago, so it should be cool. Hopefully the weather will be ok, since we were talking about making a side trip to Mt Saint Helens on one of the days.

Suck-Dalgo

So Jon and I went to see Hidalgo tonight, and although I wasn’t expecting much, I still managed to be disappointed. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie that took so long to say so little so poorly. Needless to say, I wouldn’t recommend this movie to anyone, save those who are just satisfied to stare at Vigo Mortenson for 2 hours and 20 min. And even those people might be disappointed, he’s in dire need of chapstick for like 1/2 the movie and his character is pretty underdeveloped. I found myself hoping that he would die in the desert about an hour and a half into the movie and put us all out of our misery.

On a similarly painful note, I have a dentist’s appointment tomorrow (3 fillings) that I’m really not looking forward to. It will be nice to have it out of the way though, one of my teeth has been bugging me for a while. Apparently I had a couple of fillings come out without realizing it, so those teeth now have cavities in them again. O joyous day, there’s nothing I love more than having to give someone $100 to have them drill on my teeth.

The Weekend

Sunday, March 21st, 2004

So Jon and I had a pretty good weekend. Yesterday we had dinner with our neighbors, which was fun. We’re so lame though, we were home and in bed by 10:30…it’s like my body has finally gotten onto a “go to bed early, get up early schedule” and now I get really tired really early, even if I slept in that morning. Today we wandered around in the Gorge, went to a couple of waterfalls along the Scenic Route that we hadn’t seen before, and went to Edgefield for dinner. It was a lot of fun, and since we did a lot of walking, I don’t feel too bad about eating prime rib for dinner. We also stopped at an outlet mall on the way back, and browsed through the stores for a couple of hours, but we didn’t really see anything too spectacular.

I have off of school tomorrow for a teacher’s inservice, so it’ll be wierd to sleep in on a Monday. I think I’ll try to be ambitious and get the tax stuff together so we can go get them done tomorrow evening. Other than that, my plans for the day are mainly relaxing and studying for class on Tuesday, when we start baking bread.

So I posted some pics that I took at school on Friday, and they can be found here. Enjoy!

Sunday

Sunday, March 14th, 2004

So we went downtown today and explored a little. We went to Powell’s, which is a really cool local chain of bookstores, and I got a couple of cookbooks. Other than that, our weekend was pretty uneventful, mostly relaxing. Jon’s playing Ocarina of Time for Gamecube, so I’ve been watching him play that. Tomorrow we start on muffins and quick breads at school, it’ll be a relief to not have to make pies anymore. I’m pretty tired, so I’m gonna try to get to bed at a reasonable time tonight, since 5 am comes pretty quick.

Pie Madness

Wednesday, March 10th, 2004

So this week in class we’re working on pies and tarts, so it’s been a lot of fun. Yesterday I made a really tasty apple pie and three little mini quiches, which were really cute. Today I made a lemon tart with a white chocolate glaze, a bacon, cheddar, and onion quiche, and some dark chocolate and raspberry tartlets. Our test is on friday, we have to make 2 pies and a tart, so hopefully it’ll go ok. I got an A on the test last week (cookies) but it’s harder to make pies look professional, the crust is really fragile and sometimes things just don’t look perfect. I’m especially nervous about the fruit tart, I can never get the fruit to look even, and our teacher is really picky about that. Oh well, at least even the mistakes taste good :)

So instead of dealing with the joys of parking downtown, I ride the Max to school in the morning. It’s actually pretty cool, I can zone out, read, whatever, and I don’t have to pay to park. I also get to hear some of the other passenger’s conversations, which are usually pretty boring, but occasionally can be funny.
