Happy Birthday Lindsay

So today was my friend Lindsay’s 20th birthday. A few of us went to Applebees to celebrate. Here’s the birthday girl. Happy Birthday Lindsay!

The End of an Era

Thursday, June 17th, 2004

So my days of coming home from school and slacking off every afternoon are finally over. I got a job on Monday, and I started it on Tuesday after class. I’m working as a baker for this BBQ restaurant down the street from my house. It’s called Reo’s, and so far the job is going pretty well. Yesterday I made a ton of cobbler (peach and apple), pound cake, and (shudder) rice krispie treats. It’s cool because the schedule is kind of flexible, and I’m pretty much left to my own devices, as long as I get the baking done. And another bonus, I can eat whatever I want while I’m there, and the food is really good. The people I work with are really nice too, so all in all it’s a pretty nice arrangement.

A Victim of My Own Ambition

Thursday, June 10th, 2004

So for some reason when I got home from class yesterday, I felt the urge to do laundry. This normally only happens when I’m down to my last clean tank top and the only socks that aren’t dirty are the purple ones with pink bunnies on them that I got for easter when I was in high school. But for some reason, probably because I really wanted to put off cleaning the kitchen, I started doing laundry at about 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. I didn’t finish until after midnight. I washed things I’d forgotten I even owned. Since I was in a cleaning and organizing kind of mood, and doing laundry consists of a lot of time sitting and waiting for the dryer to be done, I decided to clean and reorganize our bedroom closet, which has been getting steadily more messy and disorganized since we moved in. It took about 2 hours of rearranging, bagging up old clothes for Goodwill, and moving both dressers around before I was happy with how it looked. But now it’s all pretty and organized, with everything in the right spot, color coordinated, and clean. I figure it’ll stay that way for a couple of weeks at the most.

Mmm…cheesecake

Tuesday, June 8th, 2004

So we made cheesecakes in class yesterday and today, and they turned out pretty well. I put creme de menthe and chocolate chips in mine, and covered it with a mint chocolate ganache. I sent them down to the bakery to sell; the last thing I need in the house is cheesecake. We also made creme brulee and creme caramel today. I made a chocolate custard that I’ll turn out of the mold tomorrow so I can brulee the top. For the practical on Friday I’m making chocolate creme brulee with caramelized bananas and a tuile cookie garnish. Speaking of tuiles, I made up some tuile paste today and played around with it. It took a while to get the hang of shaping the cookies once they were baked, they set up so quickly. It seemed like it worked the best to only bake 2 at a time so I could fold them up before they cooled off too much. Tomorrow I’m going to work on some piped caramel garnishes, since I haven’t tried that yet. One of the girls in our class got a really nasty burn when she was piping hot sugar, so I’m thinking I’ll be buying a glove to protect my hand a little.

On a non-food related note, I dyed my hair. It’s red, but a really dark red, like a burgundy color. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. I’m planning on getting about 3 in cut off this weekend, it’s getting too long again.

Other than that, everything has been pretty uneventful as of late, hence the lack of entries. I’m bringing my camera to school tomorrow though, so I should have some new pics up by the end of the week.

The 3 Day Weekend/Urban Archeology

Tuesday, June 1st, 2004

So we had a pretty relaxing weekend. On Saturday night, we went over to my friend’s house for a barbecue/going away party. Sunday we had a couple of people over for dinner, which was fun. Yesterday we saw Shrek 2. I wasn’t super crazy about the first one, I mean it was ok, but I didn’t get as into it as everyone else seemed to. However, I really enjoyed the second one. It seemed like a lot of the humor was geared towards adults; as a matter of fact, it seemed like the adults in the audience were laughing more than the kids.

Today for some reason I had this major urge to deal with some of the clutter in my life. I’m not a particularly neat person by nature, although I like having everything in it’s place, it seems like clutter just seems to build up to the point of absurdity before I can motivate myself to do anything about it. Today though, maybe the planets were aligned or something, because I cleaned out my truck.
