The 3 Day Weekend/Urban Archeology

So we had a pretty relaxing weekend. On Saturday night, we went over to my friend’s house for a barbecue/going away party. Sunday we had a couple of people over for dinner, which was fun. Yesterday we saw Shrek 2. I wasn’t super crazy about the first one, I mean it was ok, but I didn’t get as into it as everyone else seemed to. However, I really enjoyed the second one. It seemed like a lot of the humor was geared towards adults; as a matter of fact, it seemed like the adults in the audience were laughing more than the kids.

Today for some reason I had this major urge to deal with some of the clutter in my life. I’m not a particularly neat person by nature, although I like having everything in it’s place, it seems like clutter just seems to build up to the point of absurdity before I can motivate myself to do anything about it. Today though, maybe the planets were aligned or something, because I cleaned out my truck.

You wouldn’t think that you could get that much junk into the cab of an S10 and still have room for 2 people. Today, though, I found out just how incorrect that assumption is. I ended up filling 2 garbage bags full of junk, not counting the plastic bottles that needed to be recycled. I found junkmail under the seat that was addressed to our apt. in Shorewood. This would make it at least 5 years old. I have cleaned my truck out since then, but apparently I wasn’t too particular about what was hiding under the seats. I also found 2 pairs of nylons, still sealed in packages, 2 pairs of jeans, 3 shirts I could have sworn I threw away, and about 6 tubes of chapstick. It was like an excavation; first I went through the Western Culinary strata, consisting mainly of brochures, notebooks, a couple of magazines, and some other things i actually remember putting in the back of my car. Underneath, I unearthed the “Kid’s Kastle” strata, with kids books, colored pencils, the aforementioned shirts, a couple of old paystubs, and a lot of empty Taco Bell bags (I used to stop there for breakfast before work). Underneath that was a mishmash of stuff: half empty packs of gum, two sticks of deodorant I’d bought and forgotten about, some coasters I bought the first time we went out to the coast, etc. I really should make more of an effort to keep the car clean.

I also cleaned out my locker at school today, but that wasn’t anywhere near as messy, since I’ve only had it since Feb. I did find like 6 dirty side towels though, which is nice. I was wondering where they’d all dissappeared to; we started with 12 and I only could find 5 in the house. So now they’re all clean and bleached, and I’m ready to start fresh and organized tomorrow. I also brought home all the supplemental recipe books they give us at the start of each new class. They’ll be nice to add to my collection at home, and now there’s room in my locker for my toolkit without having to shove it in sideways.

I wish I was the kind of person who naturally kept everything neat and clean; it’s one of the things I would change about myself if I could. However, being messy most of the time (not dirty, just having lots of clutter around) does make me appreciate it more when things are clean. It’ll be nice to drive to school in my nice clean truck and put my stuff in my nice clean locker when I get there. For the 5 minutes that it stays clean, that is.

Being neat can be a pig pain in the ass. It’s a problem I struggle with. I like everything to be nice and neat and organized. Sometimes I get so obsessed that I can’t even sleep if I see my closet is all messy or the floor is dirty…I just have to clean it. I wish it didn’t bother me and could just through things everywhere!
