Next time you guys take a food trip, call me :) As for Papa Haydn, when we went there in November, my husband had the Chocolate Box, and it was pretty tasty. I don't know if the problem with the cakes was just because they were getting old, or if there was something else going on. After two strikes, though, I'm not inclined to try it again. In regards to Pix, I was pretty impressed; I liked the chocolate cake with the soft center (the name escapes me) and the apple nougatine tart was excellent. And their desserts are so pretty. My goal is to go back semi-regularly until I've tried everything. Criollo, on the other hand, I haven't gotten around to yet. I definately want to go there, one of my friends from Western Culinary worked there briefly and she says everything is excellent. I've also been meaning to go back to Ken's and get a couple more canneles, it's hard to find them anywhere else. And then directly to the gym!

I've never had such problems with Papa Haydn. I've only gone to the one in NW, but for what they do, primarily cakes, I think they do a pretty good job -- and I'm rather picky. Some things are better than others, but one of the things I like about them is that their cakes are generally quite moist. I've never had the banana cream pie, but I have had their german chocolate cake and definitely did not have the same experience. As one who generally doesn't like chocolate cakes, I was quite impressed. I also brought a friend with me once from out of town who is a dessert snob. This is a guy I've travelled with to Chicago and San Francisco just for food trips. We've eaten together at The French Laundry, Charlie Trotter's, Tru (Gale Gand's restaurant), Masa's, Chez Panisse, etc, etc, plus top restaurants outside SF and Chicago. He was quite smitten with Papa Haydn and we tried several items. I think one of his favorites was the black box thing they do. I do usually go on Friday or Saturday nights, though, when it's busy.

What do you think of Pix and Criollo?

Interesting...I have to say that if a slice of cake was $7-8, and it sucked, it'd be going back. Heck, $7-8 will get you a fancy schmancy cocktail, an order of Toro sushi or the lion's share of a pound of Stumptown coffee beans...Thanks for your reply!

If it's truly unacceptable, yes I do. However, I'm more likely to do that with main dishes than desserts. It seems like I have higher expectations than most people for desserts, so generally I don't send them back, or I'd be sending something back almost every time I go out to eat.

Heather, when you receive sub-standard food from a restaurant, do you send it back/refuse to pay for it? Just curious.
